Hey social/political activist people- i found a bunch of cool group sites that might be beneficial to the project. if you want me to send them to you just hit me up with an email! -Alex Dermond 302
I just got a mass email from the Campus Anti-War Network which reminded me that they might be a useful organization to look at in terms of social /political activists use of the Internet. They're on campus and seem easy to contact: Campus Anti-War Network
Does anyone know when we are supposed to be starting this project? Ifyou've already started, what kind of websites have you visited? ~Meghan Daly 301
Like Meghan I am wondering if anyone has visited any interesting websites? I have been searching and still have not found anything that interesting. Jordan Gillman 305
Hello everyone! Jenna, please sign up soon! We're partners in crime. Talk to you soon! -Michelle Harbin 302: here's a quick link to our own message board

I am just curious if anyone who has been working on pregnant women has found anything? To be honest, I am not exactly sure what I should be looking for? Like ways that pregnant women use the internet and how often they do so? Thanks, Paige Port(305)
Like Paige, I am also working on pregnant women, and not quite sure where to be looking. I have gone to some chat rooms and just obvserved, but I didn't know if we were supposed to pretend to actually be a pregnant woman? Has anyone else started looking for stuff? And if so, how are you going about this? Polly Specktor (301)
I am also working on the pregnant woman project. one of my friends did it last semester so i will ask her via facebook (since she is abroad) what she did for the project. You definitely act as if u are a pregnant person. So i will get back to you asap with what she tells me. Allie Schachter (302)
For those of you who are doing an ethnography on people of color I found a university websight that could really help. I decided to look for a student organization whose members were of one ethnicity, in my case Latin American. I am going to create a survey with questions directed towards their usage of the internet. Here is the webpage that lists all the student organizations on campus: http://www.studentorg.wisc.edu/sooform/search/rsocat.asp?CategoryID=6 Hope this helps! Jordan Gillman - 305
Hi Jordon! I'm going to be observing women from a Latina sorority on campus. I have a friend that's in it, so I will be conducting interviews and observing them during a study jam. I figured since you are doing latinos/as that we could exchange information and observations along the way. Let me know! -Michelle Harbin 302
I am in the process of looking at some groups and chats online. But I was wondering for those of you who are working on pregnant women, what websites you have come across where you can just observe? Thanks. - Paige Port 305
Hi Jordon. Is there any luck with your ethnography of people of color. I'm going to be interviewing girls from the Kappa Delta Chi sorority, a latina sorority. Let me know if you have any luck or find any cool updates. I'll let you know what I get too. Thanks! -Michelle Harbin 302
Hi Michelle! I am observing Latino Men from a fraternity on campus. My friend is in the fraternity so I am going to interview his friends during one of there meetings. When I spoke to Germaine about this she thought it would be great to work with someone who was observing Latina women. After we collect our data we should definately compare our findings. Also, maybe we should come up a series of questions together so we have better data to compare. Let me know what you think - Jordan Gillman 305
Hi Jordon! That sounds great. I'm just waiting to hear back from the sorority on when I can come in and interview them. I came up with a set of questions to ask them. Maybe we could swap some questions via e-mail and compare what we have so our information is on the same page. I'm excited! Here's my e-mail, mmharbin@wisc.edu. Have a good weekend! Michelle Harbin 302
Hey pregnant women ethnographers. I have been trying different sites and so far I have found some that I do and do not like. I have found the site pregnancy.about.com is not as great or as easy to nagivate as the sites babycenter.com or babycrowd.com. What have you girls found? Any favorite websites so far? -Polly Specktor, 301
To anyone doing the pregnant women ethnography -- this isn't my topic, so possibly this is off base (I'm not sure if you're even allowed to use LiveJournal) -- but I know there a lot of LJ communities that are extremely close knit. I've checked out some semi-related topics before, and just by doing an interest search there are scores of communities, many of which have been posted to within the last few minutes/hours, which is a good indication it's really active. If anyone is still interested, here are the search results I found. -Chelsea Smith (301)
Hi people doing pregnant women! so i found a really great site last night, www.cafemom.com. Basically, I made up a story about being a 20 year old college student who is pregnant. I posted by story at like 12:10 am, and 45 minutes later my story had already been viewed 10 times, and comment on 5 times. These moms sure are active on this site. Anyways, just thought I would let you guys know so you could check it out if you wanted to. Becoming a member is really easy and you can provide as much or as little information about yourself as you want! -- Paige, 305
To anyone doing senior citizens-what is everyone coming up with? Has anyone found any interesting sites? I have been checking some out, but have not found anything great yet. - Jenna, 302
Hi Jordan! SO, I ended up not meeting with the latina sorority. They never got back to me, so I decided to join a black message board. it's been going really well and i've been getting alot of great information. i even got an IM from someone who saw my posting and wanted to chat more. I'm posing as a black business woman in her 30's. i wish you luck with the latino frat. maybe someone else would be interested in doing it with you. good luck! -Michelle Harbin 302
Jenna, it looks like we will be presenting the same day. Do you want to discuss findings before we present? Maybe we can help each other with organization of the presentation. Let me know in discussion, bYE! Michelle 302
For all you doing senior citizens, what websites have you come up with? I found a lot of good info in some Pew Reports that I'm trying to build off of but haven't found any chat rooms or blogs that are fun or of good quality. Let me know if you find something interesting and I will keep you updated on my findings. Thanks! ~Meghan Daly, 301
How's everyone doing with their projects? Michelle Harbin, 302
Jenna and other senior citizen ethnographers; I think I going to use the "internet celebrity" Geriatric1927 from YouTube. He has his own personal website complete with a forum that hosts quite a few senior citizens and people close to being qualified as seniors. (interestingly Canada seems to think of seniors as 50 and up, strange) I don't plan on misrepresenting myself, first because I don't feel completely comfortable doing that, and second because I feel it will be much easier to be straight forward with the forum users who seem honest and open. What have you all found?-Brian
Hey pregnant women peeps, sorry I've been MIA (exams suck). Anyway I have been impersonating this pregnant teenage student on Dailystength.com. This site kind of weirds me out but its ok. I also interviewed a couple of pregnant women to see how they use the internet as a "pregnant woman" (my mom is a teacher so basically her entire faculty was interviewed). I also signed up for babyzone.com. with this site you can chart when you were impregnated and it will tell you these cute things about what you should be doing or feeling during whatever stage you are at in the pregnancy. I've been just roaming around the Internet trying to find out anything and everything.
Jenna, let's get together on Sunday to go over our findings. Hope all is going well. Just sooo busy right now. Feel free to e-mail me at mmharbin@wisc.edu. See you soon!
Hey Jordan, I was just wondering how everything is going for you? Obviously, as you can see, this is the first time I've posted on wiki...whoops! But I've been extrememly busy lately. Anyways, I have a really good start on my presentation, just wondering how you are coming along? Have you thought of a good discussion question we may be able to ask? I haven't put much thought into it as of yet, as I am still trying to piece my presentation together. -Kristen Witting (305)
Hey Brian-
I was just wondering if you found the "internet celebrity" site fairly useful? I agree with you about misrepresenting myself as a senior citizen, I don't see that as the way to go about it, but that is just my opinion. I have been going to different websites as someone who merely observes what others have posted. Anyways, just wondering what you thought about the "internet celebrity" thing and if it has helped you gather information for your presentation? -Kristen Witting (305)
Kristen-
It was so-so for being useful. I got a response from a senior who used the board, and she actually kind of refuted my hypothesis of the board being a "senior haunt"
Also I'm having trouble finding the "elderly only" page that someone put up on here
-Brian
Hi pregnant women people - I posted a message trying to get first-hand info from women at cafemom.com (good site by the way) but no one has responded... I also went into family planning and pregnant chat rooms but didn't have the courage to impersonate a pregnant woman - if any of you were able to get helpful first-hand feedback could you e-mail me some information? thank you, Erica Twomey (303)
For anyone doing an ethnography on African Americans I found that blackplanet.com is a very interesting site. It is the most visted site among African Americans. I have not had much luck finding a good chat room, though, and I was wondering if anyone else found one. Mallory Mason (301)
Hey Brian~ I know we're partners for presenting tomorrow and we haven't really discussed anything yet. Sorry i've been realy busy. Anyway, if you get this soon you should send me an e-mail and we can talk about our findings or what we are presenting. Hope your project went well. Megan Gaza (304)
Hey Jenna! We did an awesome job on our ethnography presentation! It was alot of fun and I learned alot of interesting facts. Have a great Spring Break and good luck with your final paper! Michelle Harbin 302
I hope everyone's project is going well! Michelle 302
Hi Michelle! I just wanted to see how your project is going. Hope all is well. Jordan 305
Hey- for all you doing an ethnography of the elderly, I thought I would create a whole seperate page for us so we can talk through there. I know we are done with our presentations but it may be helpful for writing our final paper. You can find it on the tab to the right where all the other pages are located. It's entitled "Ethnographies of the Elderly". Also, in case some of you are having trouble finding more sites, www.suddenlysenior.com has 222 links for elderly websites and I've found this to be extremely helpful! Good luck! ~ Meghan Daly, 301
I found this really great article online. If anyone is interested in mashups and remixes, check it out. http://www.masternewmedia.org/video_internet_television/online-video/collaborative-movie-production-Basement-Tapes-20070413.htm
---Allie Schachter, 302 (i think)
Thanks Allie! Hope everyone's projects are moving along. What types of screen shots are senior citizens using? Jenna, 302
Yea! Class of 2007! Congrat to all the graduating seniors! Hope everyone has successful finals! Michelle 302
Hey everyone. Since we had a presentation on podcasts today, I thought I would share my experience listening to podcasts for pregnant women. They are free on itunes and are just another way to immerse yourselves in the lives of pregnant women. It's kind of interesting to hear people talk about different issues and to just listen to what they have to say. I haven't checked it out, but there might be podcasts for senior citizens or the other groups that are also doing an ethnography practicum. Hope everyone is doing well with their projects! -Polly Specktor, 301
Hey Polly, I know the project is almost done, but I was curious what kind of information you found on the podcasts? What did you search for when looking? Hope your project is going well. -- Paige, 305
Hi Paige, I went to the iTunes store, then searched "pregnancy," then scrolled down to podcasts. They have many different podcasts for pregnant women, and they are all free so if you don't like one, you can just try another. I listened to one called "Pregtastic Pregnancy Podcast." They are each about an hour long, but you can skip ahead if they aren't talking about something you find interesting. Some of the topics they talk about are tips for what to pack when going to the hospital, prenatal yoga, and financial planning for your baby. Has anyone else found any particular interesting websites in these last few weeks or days? --- Polly, 301
For the final papers I was wondering if people were handing screen shots for everyday they were online or just a screen shot of all the sites they visited and studied? Mallory 301
