Observations of Note: Insight into the cost of Bikeforums
This post by Brian, one of the forum administrators, sheds a little light on the costs associated with maintaining the Bikeforums community, of note was the $2000 a month for server upkeep, due to the huge volume of traffic that the site sees each day.
- The thread in which this post is made is in reference to the (temporary?) banning of another user, blonduathlongrl, for her negative comments about the forum outside of the forum itself (in this case, on a blog). Brian picked up on it through some sort of google search that allows him to monitor discussion about the forum outside of his context as an administrator. This banning has caused a bit of a stir in the community as many feel blonduathlongrl was merely expressing her opinion, and did not violate any user agreement of the forums (seeing that she allegedly wasn't even present when she made the comments). Perhaps her role as being one of the few female members (this is confirmed) of the forum has something to do with the other members' support?
- UPDATE: It appears that blonduathlongrl may have returned to the forum...haven't seen a post by her yet.

 - I particularly liked this post. Shimano is one of the largest manufacturers of bicycle parts in the world, and their acquisition of Pearl Izumi, one of the biggest cycling apparel companies, is a big deal for the cycling world. His amalgamation of Shimano part terminology (Dura-Ace, Tiagra, etc.) for clothing was humorous, and true to many of the popularly held ideas about their quality hierarchy.
- ITEMS OF NOTE: Fatty (the author of the blog) actually responded directly to my comment in today's post, he was very flattered by the sarcastic (in tune with the sarcastic tone of the article) compliment that I gave him suggesting he join The Onion writing staff.

Planning to reread Watson article for additional questions to pose in presentation (and introduce the ACT system for determining the validity of online communities). I have also contacted my presentation partner, and she and I are sending each other our outlines for review and to form our joint question to the class.

That Fat Cyclist blog is funny. The guy who created it is both comical and constructive, all the while being very personable. Good choice.
