  1. Add links to news stories, blogs, discussion boards, websites, or YouTube videos that may of interest to others that are studying special interest communities.
  2. Looking for a special interest group to join? Get some ideas from Google Groups-- there are thousands of groups devoted to various "special interests" (ie, cooking, science fiction, biking, music, etc.) Many of these are UseNet news groups which have been around since the 1980s.

Message Board

Use this message board to communicate with everyone who is working on special interest communities. There is also the main Virtual Communities message board where you can communicate with your presentation partner and everyone else who is studying virtual communities.

Place one space before your message so that it shows up in a white box.

Here is an interesting study that was recently published by the Pew Internet Group about hobbyists online. It seems that seeking information about some hobby or special interest pursuit is among the most popular online activities.

Do you think such activity constitutes a "community" or not? What criteria might you use to decide if an online group with a shared interest is a virtual community? See: Pew Internet: Hobbyists Online

2/9/08: Has anyone had any luck finding real-time chat communities for their special interest group(s)? I've tried through IRC and Yahoo/Google groups with no luck. Feel free to message me on my wiki page if you have tips or ideas. -Jared Forney (305)

2/18/08: I feel like the real-time chat community has to be provided in some way by the construction of the community that you join. I haven't gone to it yet, but i know the community I am in uses IRC chats for discussion of the site's structure and lends a way for the users to have input other than in the forums. I'll try to remember to post it here if I find a different source of IRC channels -Matt Rezin (302)

2/19/08: Matt, don't worry about looking into it on my behalf, it looks like I'm going to have more than enough info for my presentation just covering my blog and forum (even the forum by itself would be enough). - Jared Forney (305)

2/21/08: I found my real-time chat through the message board community I am part of as well. They have an IRC Chat to handle "additional traffic and discussion." - Phil Mauermann (304)
